Operation
Thisinstrumentmeasurestherefractiveindexof a sampleand
displaystheresultsinºCorSpecificgravity.
1.ZeroAdjustment
Cover the prism with a few drops of distilled water. Close the
coverplateandviewthelight/darkboundary(shadowline).If
necessary,turn thetheadjustmentscrewuntil shadowlinealigns
withthescale’szeroline.Thezerocalibrationshouldbe
performedatambienttemperatureandshouldberepeatedevery
30minutesifthe thetemperaturechanges.After zeroadjustment,
cleantheprismwith a softcloth.
2.SamplePreparationandReading
Coverthe theprismwith a few waterdropsofdistilled from
includedvial. the that theClose coverplateso liquidspreads
acrosstheentiresurfaceoftheprism without air bubbles or dry
spots.Allowthesampleto
remainontheprismfor
approximately30seconds.
Whileholdingtheinstrument
under a lightsource,look
throughtheeyepiece.Thebrix
concentrationisdeterminedby
the theintersectionof
boundaryofthelightanddark
fieldsonthe thescale.If scale
appearsoutoffocus,adjust by rotatingthe theeyepieceuntil
scaleis in focus.Theinstrumentalsofeaturesaneye‐guard to
preventstray eyepiecelightfromenteringthe andcausing
reflections.
Itmaybe necessary adjust to the thepositionof light tosource
maximizethe thecontrastof shadowline.Undernormal
conditions,optimalcontrastisobtained by holdingtheinstrument
underneath perpendicularand to a lightsource.

3.AutomaticTemperatureCompensation(ATC)
Temperaturecompensationrelievesthe theuserof responsibility
tomeasuretemperatureandapply a correctionfactorwhen
takingreadings.This refractometer makes this correction
automatically. When ambient temperature varies from 20°C,
readings are automatically toadjusted compensatefor
temperaturevariancebetween10°Cto30°C.
