OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

MUTING AUDIBLE INDICATORS (FIG. B)

By default, the ESF050 provides both visual and audible indicators. To

mute the audible indicators:

1. Loosen screw to remove Battery Cover(6).

2. Move the Mute Switch(8) into the mute position.

3. Replace Battery Cover(6) and secure with screw. Do not over-tighten.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT (FIG. B)

When low battery indication occurs (see STUD LOCATION INDICATORS

table), the batteries must be replaced:

1. Loosen screw to remove Battery Cover(6).

2. Remove exhausted batteries.

3. Install two new AAA batteries, noting proper polarity.

4. Replace Battery Cover(6) and secure with screw. Do not over-tighten.

TROUBLESHOOTING AND BEST PRACTICES

DETECTION ACCURACY

• Accuracy is affected by the presence and proximity of:

• items or equipment that produce strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields.

• moisture.

• metallic building materials.

• foil-backed insulation.

• conductive wallpaper.

• For maximum accuracy, use on:

• walls with clean and dry, single-layered drywall.

• walls with no gaps between studs and the drywall.

• walls with gaps between drywall and non-stud materials, such as PVC

piping or electrical conduit.

• For maximum accuracy, after a stud is located, locate a second stud along

the same wall, then return to the first stud. Check for the same stud at spots

directly above or below the first scan area for additional confirmation.

• DO NOT remove Felt Pads(5). The detector will NOT operate properly

without the pads.

CLEANING

Be sure instrument is turned off and wipe with a clean, dry lint-free

cloth.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

STORAGE

Remove batteries when not in use for a prolonged period of time.

Do not expose to high temperatures or humidity. After a period of

storage in extreme conditions exceeding the limits mentioned in the

General Specifications section, allow instrument to return to normal

operating conditions before using.

WARNINGS

To ensure safe operation and service of the stud finder, follow these

instructions. Failure to observe these warnings can result in serious

personal injury, fire, or electrical shock. Retain these instructions for

future reference.

• The stud finder may detect electrical wiring or pipes in the same manner as

studs. ALWAYS use caution when nailing, cutting, or drilling into walls which

may contain these items. Turn off all gas, water, and electric power before

penetrating a wall.

• NOT insulated. Avoid contact with areas where energized conductive

elements may be present.

• Always wear eye protection.

• The stud finder is designed to detect inconsistencies to suggest the location

of hidden objects, but not specifically what the hidden objects are. Objects

behind walls may not be detected. The stud finder may also detect unintended

hidden objects. For this reason, the stud finder alone should not be relied upon

exclusively for confirming the location of hidden objects. Use other information

to help locate items before penetrating a wall. Studs and joists are normally

spaced 16 or 24" (40 or 60 cm) apart, are normally 1-1⁄2" (38 mm) wide, and

may be separated by firestops. Anything closer together, or of a different width,

may not be a stud or joist.

• There are no user serviceable parts in this instrument.

INSTALLING BATTERIES FIG. B

Prior to first use, batteries must be installed:

1. Loosen screw to remove battery cover(6).

2. Install two AAA batteries(10) (included). Note proper polarity.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

POWER ON/OFF

On: Press and hold the Power Button(1) for one second to power on. The

detector will auto-calibrate, the buzzer will beep once and the button's

backlight will illuminate green.

Off: Press and hold the Power Button(1) for one second to power off. The

buzzer will beep twice, and the button's backlight will go dark.

AUTO-POWER OFF (APO)

By default, the detector will auto-power off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

INDICATORS

Left Edge Detected: The Left Edge(2) and Center V-Notch(2) LEDs will

illuminate when V-Notch is on the left edge of a stud.

Right Edge Detected: The Right Edge(4) and Center V-Notch(3) LEDs will

illuminate when V-Notch is on the right edge of a stud.

Center Detected:The Left Edge(2), Right Edge(4) and Center V-Notch(3)

LEDs will all illuminate when V-Notch is centered on a stud.

DETECTING STUDS (FIG. C)

1. Power on the detector and press the Sensor Plate(7) flat against the

wall to be scanned.

NOTE: If placed against the wall directly over a stud, the Stud Location

Indicators(2),(3),(4) may not illuminate. Move the detector along the

wall until a stud is detected, then back to the original location to confirm.

2. Move the detector steadily along the wall. When a stud edge is detected,

the corresponding Stud Location Indicator LEDs(2),(3),(4) will illuminate.

When the center of the stud is detected, all 3 Indicators(2),(3),(4) will

illuminate and the buzzer will emit a steady tone.

NOTE:The detector is more accurate the more it is moved along the wall.

NOTE:Whenever possible, place the detector against the wall starting

away from any known stud locations for maximum accuracy.

3. For most accurate marking of the stud location, mark the location of the

first detected edge, then reposition the detector to the opposite of the

stud and mark the detected location of the other edge.

4. For additional confirmation, locate a second stud along the same wall,

then return to the original stud location to verify its location before

piercing or drilling into the wall.

NOTE:

Typical spacing for studs is 16" or 24" in the U.S., and 40cm or

60cm in countries using the metric system.
