LOCATING ALARMS
SMOKE ALARMS
Sufficient smoke mustenter the SmokeAlarm before it willre-
spond. The Smoke Alarm needsto be within 7.5 metres (25ft) of
the fire to respond quickly. It also needs to be inaposition where
its alarmcan be heard throughout yourhome, so itcan wake the
occupants in time for all to escape. A single Smoke Alarm will
give some protection ifit isproperly installed, but most homes
will require two ormore toensure thata reliable earlywarning is
given. Formaximum protectionyou shouldputindividual
SmokeAlarmsin allthe roomswhere fireis mostlikely tobreak
out, (apart from kitchens etc. see Locations to Avoid).
ASmokeAlarm shouldbe locatedbetween thesleeping area
andthe mostlikely sourcesof fire(livingroom orkitchen forex-
ample), But it should not be more than7.5 metres (25 ft) from
the doorto anyroom wherea firemight start, and blockthe es-
cape route from the house.
Important: ThisSmoke Alarmisdesignedforasingle occu-
pancy in a residential type environment.
HEAT ALARMS
The Heat Alarm gives afire warningwhen thetemperature at the
unit reaches58C.It isideal forkitchens, garages,boiler°
housesandother areaswhere thereare normallyhigh levelsof
fumes, smoke or dust i.e. places where Smoke Alarmscannot
be installedwithoutthe riskofexcessivenuisance alarms.A
Heat Alarmshould onlybe used ina roomadjoining anescape
route,inconjunctionwithSmoke Alarmsontheescape routes.
Allthe HeatAlarmsandSmoke Alarmsshouldbe intercon-
nectedtoensure theearly warningwill beheard, particularlyby
somebodysleeping.Aproperly designedearly warning firesys-
tem ensures the alarmisgiven before the escape routesbe-
comeblocked with smoke.Therefore theremust beSmoke
Alarmsalong theescape routesas HeatAlarms wouldnot give
sufficient warning.However, afire ina closedroom(e.g.
kitchen) adjoiningtheescape route,can eventually causethe
corridor to become smoke-logged due to smoke leaking out
fromaroundthe doorbefore adequatewarning canbe givenby
detectors inthe corridor. (Smokeleaking outfrom a roomis of-
ten cool and slow moving so it can take along time to rise to the
ceiling, andtravel toa detectorwhich couldbe some distance
away). AHeat Alarmin the closed roomwillgive early warning of
fire in that room and help overcome this problem.
Figure2 illustrateswhere HeatAlarmsandSmokeAlarms
should belocated ina typical twostorey house.Note thespac-
ings in “Recommended Protection” whichensure the early de-
tection of fire and that warning will be heard.
Locate Heat Alarms inrooms adjoining or on escape routes -
kitchens, garages, boiler houses etc.where SmokeAlarms are
unsuitable.Install within5.3m(17 feet)of potentialsourcesof
fire.
Single Storey Dwelling.
If theHome ison onelevel (a bungalowor mobilehome forex-
ample) you shouldputthe first SmokeAlarmin a corridororhall-
way between thesleeping and livingareas. Placeit asnear to
thelivingareaas possible,butmake sureyou canhearit loudly
enough to wakea person in the bedrooms. (forexample, see fig-
ure 3)
Ifthe bungalowis verylarge andthe corridoror hallwayis more
than say 15 metres (50 ft) long, oneSmoke Alarmwillnotbe suf-
ficient. Thisisbecausenomatterwhereitislocateditwillbe
more than 7.5 metres from potential fires.
In houses with more than one sleeping area, Smoke Alarms
should be placedbetween each sleepingarea andthe living
area.
Multi Storey Dwellings
If thehomeis onmorethan onelevelthe bestplacefor thefirst
Smoke Alarm is inthe downstairs hallway near thestairs. This is
because smoke islikely tobe detectablein thehallway beforeit
reaches the upstairs landing and bedrooms. The second Smoke
Alarm should be upstairs, because the downstairs Smoke Alarm
is unlikelytodetect thesmokefrom afirein abedroomupstairs
(see figure 2).
Maximum Protection
Formaximum protectionyoushould put individualSmokeAlarms
inall therooms where fireis most likely to break out (apart from the
locations to avoid, mentioned below).Ensure that they are all in-
terconnected. The livingroom is the mostlikely place fora fire to
start at night, followed bythe kitchen and then thedining room.
Youshould alsoconsiderputting Smoke Alarmsin anybedrooms
where fires might occur, for instance, where there isan electrical
appliancesuch as an electric blanketorheater, or where the occu-
pant isa smoker. You could alsoconsider putting Smoke Alarms
in any roomswhere the occupantis unable torespond very wellto
a fire starting inthe room, suchas an elderly orsick person ora
very young child.
Checking you can hear the Smoke & Heat Alarms

able to hear it in each bedroom with the door closed, above the
