Voice - The Cloud 44-A has a great deal of depth and detail across its frequency
range. Starting at 1 to 3 feet should provide excellent sound. When using the
microphone for spoken word or singing at close proximity (closer than 2 feet), it may
be desirable to use the “V,”or voice position, of the switch located at the bottom of the
microphone housing to reduce exaggerated bass frequencies that naturally occur due
to the proximity effect common with ribbon microphones. The “M,”or music position,
will provide a deeper bass response. It is advisable to try both settings to familiarize
yourself with the differences in characteristics so that you may choose the appropriate
setting for the desired result on any given source.
Drum Overheads -
A Blumlein pair, spaced pair, or single mic placed a few feet above
the kit will result in a natural, full-bodied sound while nicely smoothing out
potentially harsh transients. The Cloud 44-A sounds full and detailed as a room mic
when placed several feet in front of a drum kit. Generally the “M,”or music setting
will be desirable. However, the “V,”or voice position, can be used as a rumble filter if
undesirable low frequencies occur. This setting can also be useful when recording drums
or piano in a room with a wooden floor where significant low frequency vibrations may
occur. Do not use on kick drums without extreme caution or damage may occur. For
kick, follow the guidelines for recording loud guitar amps (off axis, great distance, etc.),
doing so will protect the microphone and produce a nice, full sound.
Amplifiers -
For smaller amps or those with moderate volume levels, place the
microphone no closer than 18 inches from the speaker cone, slightly off axis from the
side. For very loud or higher SPL amplifiers, we highly recommend placing the mic at a
greater distance from the source. With proper placement, the 44-A will provide many
years of service in this capacity. Do not place the microphone anywhere you can feel
wind or sound pressure with your hand. In the “M,”or music position, guitar and bass
amps benefit greatly from the Cloud 44-A’s beautiful and full bass reproduction.
In the “V,”or voice position, the benefits of the reduced proximity effect may be useful,
especially at closer distances or where the source is intended to fit in a mix where a
significant amount of low frequencies are already present.
Due to its smooth frequency characteristics, natural,
detailed sound, and switchable frequency response curve
(“Music,”or “Voice”) the Cloud 44-A is a versatile
microphone that excels in a wide variety of applications.
Instruments and voice are captured with detailed and
natural character. The Cloud 44-A is an especially desirab
alternative for vocals and instruments that may sound to
harsh or thin using other types of microphones, such as
condenser, where elevated response in the upper frequen
bands, distortion, or other resonant peaks may exist. Rib
microphones sound smooth in comparison to other micro
phone types, as distortion characteristics do not exist
inherently in the technology. When miking loud or potent
windy sound sources (guitar/bass amps, kick drums, plo
heavy dialogue), we recommend using a pop filter and
correct placement. Tilt the mic slightly and place it off ax
from the side, to avoid potential damage from the ribbon
taking the force of intense low frequency pressure waves
head on.
ACTIVE RIBBON MICROPHONE
Swivel Mount Use and Maintenance
The hex key that is included is for occasional tightening only. When adjusting the angle of
the microphone for placement, it is not necessary to loosen the hex screw on the mount.
The hex screw should remain very tight at all times for normal angle adjustments. Adjust
the angle of the swivel mount for placement by gripping the body or frame of the micro-
phone and moving it into position by hand. If the mount does become loose, which should
be very rare, it can be tightened easily.
To tighten the mount, simply place the mic on a stand and hold the body with one hand for
stability. Tilt the microphone forward on the mount and tighten the hex screw where the
mount meets the body of the microphone so that it is nice and snug. Move the mic forward
and back on the mount a few times, then torque a bit further to ensure that it is very tight.
If tightened properly, the mount will remain tight for a very long time and will not become
loose during normal angle adjustments.
Output and Preamps
The Cloud 44-A is an active ribbon microphone that has sensitivity similar to that of a
modern condenser microphone. For this reason, even preamps with a modest amount of
gain should have no trouble amplifying the Cloud 44-A, as it has the award winning
“Cloudlifter”circuity built inside the microphone housing. All that is required is a preamp
or input channel that provides +48v phantom power.
