Vented Enclosures
Vented enclosures, also known as "bass reex" or "ported enclosures,” utilize a tuned vent
(or "port") to capture the energy of the woofer's backwave, increasing bass response and
eciency. The tuning frequency can be altered by adjusting the vent’s size or length, allowing
users to modify bass output without changing the enclosure. Since the port supplies a portion
of the bass, it must vent into the vehicle's interior.
Guidelines for Vents:
• Vents can be any shape; cardboard tubes or PVC pipes work well.
Keep the port free of obstructions.
• Larger vents reduce duct noise, but require longer ducts to maintain tuning frequency.
• Keep vents at least one vent diameter from any wall and two vent diameters from the woofer.
• If space is limited, use PVC pipes with elbows to adjust duct length.
Bandpass Enclosures
Bandpass enclosures allow control over both low-end response and high-end cuto.
These enclosures oer:
• Increased eciency and lower distortion.
• Potential elimination of crossover electronics.
Bandpass designs, including 4th, 5th, and 6th order enclosures, vary in tuning and eciency.
The 4th order design has a sealed rear chamber and a vented front chamber, while 6th order
enclosures add a vented rear chamber for enhanced bass control.
Key Considerations for Bandpass Enclosures:
• All sound is delivered through a vent, which may aect sound quality.
• Complex design requires precise tuning and limited access to the woofer.
• Sealed and vented portions must be unobstructed for optimal performance.
• Subsonic lters can help prevent excessive cone movement and prolong speaker life.
