Climbing the Stairway
BONUS CHALLENGE:
How long can you extend the domino chain? Try adding all 45 dominoes!
Next, wind this giant chain back on itself, like an almond. Do all the dominoes
still fall down, or did you break the momentum of the chain reaction?
Tip!
The flat ends of the staircases should sit against
each other, back-to-back. Balance the
dominoes on the edge (or lip) of each step.

Slip Sliding Away
BONUS CHALLENGE:
Move the goal farther away from the slide. Did the ball reach the goal again? This is
velocity: observing changes in the ball’s speed as it travels to the goal. Place a book
under the slide. Hold the ball in place at the top of the slide until the domino strikes it,
and then release the ball.
Tip!
Set the staircase against the back of the
slide. The ball will rest in the groove at the
top of the slide. Make sure to place a large
domino at the top of the staircase just
behind the ball.

a course look just right may require some trial and error. If it doesn’t work the first time, shift the pieces around.
Keep trying until you get it!
• Each course includes a to stretch critical thinking and STEM skills. Children will need to Bonus Challenge
rearrange pieces, redesign structures, and reconsider what they’ve learned about domino eects!
• Use the unique qualities of your environment: for example, you could make domino chains that wrap around
furniture or turn around wall corners. Natural obstacles like these can enhance the fun!

BONUS CHALLENGE:
Rearrange the first three small dominoes so they curve at an angle rather
than head on. Did the ball still reach the goal? Did it travel more slowly
than before?
Tip!
Push the ball o the tee by placing at least two big
dominoes just behind the ball. This will create
enough force to send the ball into the goal.

Spinout!
BONUS CHALLENGE:
Spread the dominoes farther apart from each other. Does this generate
enough force to spin the gate and push the ball into the goal? How far
apart can you move the dominoes and still send the ball into the goal?
Tip!
The direction and speed of the gate’s spin changes
the motion of the dominoes as they fall. Run this
course several times. Experiment with force: tap the
first domino lightly, and then more forcefully.
