Introduction
The AWS5B3 portable wireless speaker is the ultimate in portable sound that goes wherever
you go. wireless lets you stream and control your music from any Bluetooth Bluetooth-
enabled wireless product, great for anywhere you are. The 900MHz wireless transmitter
gives you 150ft of room to roam from your audio source, great for outdoor entertaining at
home. And the speakerās 3.5mm jack offers a convenient direct connection option to use
everywhere in betweenājust connect your MP3 player and enjoy.
This manual shows you how to set up all three connection options: wireless, Bluetooth
900MHz wireless, and the direct connect jack, beginning with a tour of the speaker and

Care and Maintenance
ā¢ Always use a soft cloth to clean the speaker and transmitter. Never use any product containing alcohol or other
solvents as they may damage the surface.
ā¢ Use caution when plugging the power transformers in an AC outlet to avoid the risk of electric shock.
ā¢ If the speaker are used outside on a deck or patio, make sure you take them indoors in the event of a rainstorm to
prevent possible damage.
ā¢ Do not operate or store the system in extreme temperatures (below 32ĀŗF/0ĀŗC and above 122ĀŗF/50ĀŗC).

Front panel
Power and Pairing indicator shows the status
of the speaker.
Blue, slow blinking: The speaker is on but not
paired or connected (like when you turn the
speaker on for the ļ¬rst time).
Blue, fast blinking: The speaker is in
Bluetooth pairing mode. See the Using
Bluetooth Wireless section for more
information.
Solid blue: The speaker is paired with a
Bluetooth-enabled device and ready to play
audio.
Green, slow blinking: The speaker is on and in
900MHz mode, but not linked with the wireless
transmitter.
Solid green: The speaker is linked with the
900MHz wireless transmitter and ready to play
audio.
Rear panel
Bass Boost button turns the speakerās bass
enhancement on and off.
On-Off / RF-BT turns the speaker on and off
(press and hold for four seconds). It also toggles
between wireless and 900MHz wireless Bluetooth
reception (press).
Scan-RF / Pair-BT scans for the 900MHz
transmitterās signal in 900MHz mode (press).
In Bluetooth wireless mode, press and hold this
button for four seconds to begin pairing with
your device.
Volume +/ā buttons adjust the speakerās volume
level

L/M/R switch determines if the speaker plays
sound in mono as a stand-alone speaker, or plays
the left or right track in a stereo pair with an
additional AWS5B3 when streaming audio with
the 900MHz wireless transmitter
DC IN receives the small round end of the
included 9V 1200mA AC power adapter; remove
the protective cover to insert the adapter
AUDIO IN connects directly to your MP3 player,
smartphone, or other portable audio device, using
the 3.5mm audio in cable provided

There are two options to power your wireless speaker: using the included AC power adapter
or using 6 AA batteries (not included).
AC Power Adapters
1. Insert the small, round plug from the speaker AC
power adapter into the DC IN jack on the bottom
of the speaker.
2. Plug the other end of the speaker AC power
adapter into any standard 120V AC wall outlet.
Note: Be sure to use the speaker AC power adapter rated 9V DC 1200 mA.
Warning: This product is water-resistant, not waterproof. Avoid prolonged exposure to wet
environments, such as rain, mist, dew, etc. In other words, you can take it out, just donāt leave
it out. To avoid electrical shock, use this product with caution near water sources if powered
with the AC adapter. Never submerge in water.
AA Batteries
1. Remove the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the speaker.
2. Insert six (6) AA batteries (not included) into the speaker following the polarity (ā+ā and
ā-ā) as diagrammed inside the battery compartment.
3. Replace the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the speaker.
Note: Place the rubber cap in the speaker power input jack when using batteries.
DO NOT mix batteries with different chemistry types (for example, a zinc battery with an alkaline
battery).
DO NOT mix new and used batteries. DO NOT leave batteries installed in the product
when not in use for long periods. Always remove old, weak or worn-out batteries promptly and
recycle or dispose of them in accordance with local and national regulations.

Pairing
Any Bluetooth-enabled device with A2DP SOURCE that you wish to stream audio to your
speaker system must ļ¬ rst be paired to the speaker. The process is simple, and in most cases
the pairing process needs to be done only once.
To pair your Bluetooth-enabled device with the speaker:
1. Make sure your deviceās is turned on. See the wireless and/or network settings Bluetooth
menu on your device to check.
2. If the speaker isnāt already on, press and hold the On-Off / RF-BT button for four seconds
to turn it on. You will hear a beep and the indicator light on the front of the speaker will
start ļ¬ ashing blue.
3. Press and hold the Scan-RF / Pair-BT button for four seconds to enter pairing mode. You
will hear a beep and the indicator on the front of the speaker will start blinking faster.
4. Open the settings menu on your device. Select āAR SPEAKERā from the list of Bluetooth
devices available (you might have to scan for devices). If your device asks for a password,
enter ā0000ā.
5. A conļ¬ rmation screen will appear on your device once the speaker and the device are
successfully paired. The blue indicator turns solid blue to indicate ful connection. success
The speaker is now ready for you to stream audio from your device.
6. Start playing something on the device. You can control the speaker volume on the speaker
itself, using the Vol +/ā buttons
on the back of the speaker, or on your device, using its
volume controls.
Note: If you notice the sound from the speaker is distorted, turn down your deviceās volume.
Note: These power units should be plugged in so
that they stay vertical or lie ļ¬ at.

Streaming Audio With Bluetooth
Once youāve paired and connected your device with the speaker, you can control music
playback from the palm of your hand. Select your music, stop it, change songs and playlists,
all right from your deviceās screen.
To adjust volume: Press the Vol +/ā buttons
on the back of the speaker.
To disconnect from the speaker: Either turn Bluetooth off on your device or choose
āDisconnectā from the list of options in your deviceās Bluetooth settings.
To reconnect with the speaker: Just turn the speaker on and wait a few seconds for the
speaker to ļ¬ nd and connect to your device. If the speaker still hasnāt found your device
(which may happen if, for instance, another device has been connected after yours) make
sure the speaker isnāt connected to another device currently. Then select the AWS5B3 from
the list of Bluetooth connections available in your deviceās menu to connect to it.Bluetooth
Powering the Transmitter
Connect the small, round plug from the transmitter AC
power adapter to the transmitterās DC IN jack. Plug the
other end of the transmitter AC power adapter into
any standard 120V AC wall outlet.
Note: Be sure to use the speaker AC power adapter
rated 12V DC 200 mA.
Note: There is no transmitter ON/OFF switch. The transmitter is designed to be left plugged
in and powered at all times. If you will not be using the AWS5B3 for an extended period of
time, unplug the transmitter AC power adapter.
Troubleshooting
The following troubleshooting guide takes you through some of the more common problems
associated with the installation and/or operation of a wireless system. If the problem persists,
please call toll-free at 1-800-732-6866 or visit www.acoustic-research.com.
Issue: Cause and solution:
No 900MHz
wireless sound
ā¢ Check that the transmitter AC power adapter is fully inserted into the wall outlet
and the power cord from the AC adapter is ļ¬ rmly connected to the transmitter
power input jack.
ā¢ If youāre using the speaker power adapter, conļ¬ rm that itās fully inserted into a wall
outlet and the adapter power cord is ļ¬ rmly connected to the power input jack on
the speaker.
ā¢ If youāre using batteries for the speaker, check that they are fresh and inserted
with correct polarity (+, ā).
ā¢ Conļ¬ rm that the speaker is in 900MHz wireless modeāthe indicator light on the
front of the speaker should be either ļ¬ ashing or solid green. If the indicator light
is blue, press the ON-OFF / RF-BT button on the back of the speaker to switch to
900MHz mode.
ā¢ Conļ¬ rm that the speaker is turned on and tuned to the transmitterāthe indicator
light on the front of the speaker should be solid green (not blinking).
ā¢ Check that the audio source component (stereo, MP3 player, etc.) is turned on and
transmitting sound as it normally should.
ā¢ Make sure the volume on your audio source is turned up.
ā¢ Check that the speaker volume is turned up.
ā¢ Make sure you have disconnected the 3.5 mm audio in cable from the AUDIO IN
jack.
Turning the Speaker Off
1. Press and hold the On-Off / RF-BT button on the back of the speaker to turn the speaker off.
2. Conļ¬ rm that the speaker is off by verifying that the indicator light on the speakerās front
panel is no longer illuminated.
Making a Direct Connection
1. Connect one end of the provided 3.5mm audio
in cable to the AUDIO IN jack on the bottom of
the speaker.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the
headphone output on your MP3 player or other
portable audio device.
3. If the speaker isnāt already on, press and hold the
On-Off / RF-BT button to turn it on.
Note: The indicator light on the front of the
speaker does not change to show that youāre
using the direct connect audio input. It stays
the color of the wireless mode itās in (Bluetooth
or 900MHz) even while you use the direct
connection.
4. To switch back to the speakerās wireless
connection, disconnect the 3.5mm cable from the
AUDIO IN jack on the bottom of the speaker.
Warning: This product is designed to work with
line level outputs or headphone outputs only.
DO
NOT connect it directly to speaker outputs as it will
permanently damage the speaker.
Note: The 3.5mm audio direct connection suspends any Bluetooth or 900MHz wireless
streaming audio youāre listening to. The speaker plays only the direct connect audio when you
have something connected to the AUDIO IN jack on the speaker.

Connecting to an Audio Source
Connecting to an A/V Receiver
1. Plug the stereo plugs on the provided Y-adapter audio
cable into the AUDIO IN jacks on the back of the
transmitter (make sure to match the colors on the
plugs and jacks).
2. Plug the mini-plug end of the provided Y-adapter into
a mini-jack to RCA adapter (not included).
3. Connect the stereo plugs on the mini-jack to RCA
adapter to the corresponding left and right audio
outputs of your A/V receiver, amp, or other audio
source.
Connecting to a Portable Audio Device
1. Plug the stereo plugs on the provided Y-adapter audio
cable into the AUDIO IN jacks on the back of the
transmitter.
2. Plug the mini-plug end of the provided Y-adapter into
the headphone output of your MP3 player or other
portable audio device.
Streaming Audio with 900MHz Wireless Transmitter
1. Make sure the 900MHz transmitter is on and that thereās something playing on your audio
source. Turn your audio source up to at least 3/4 full volume.
2. If the speaker isnāt already on, press and hold the On-Off / RF-BT button for four seconds
to turn it on.
3. If the indicator light on the front of the speaker is blue (ļ¬ ashing or solid), press the On-Off
/ RF-BT button once to switch to 900MHz wireless mode. The indicator light starts ļ¬ ashing
green, which means the speaker is trying to link with the 900MHz wireless transmitter.
The indicator light turns solid green when the speaker is tuned to the 900MHz wireless
transmitterāyou should hear sound coming from the speaker now.
Note: If the speaker is not linked to the 900MHz transmitter, or if the transmitter isnāt
connected properly, the indicator light will continue to blink. If this occurs, please see the
Troubleshooting section of this manual.
4. Adjust the volume on the speaker as desired. To switch back to wireless mode, Bluetooth
press the On-Off / RF-BT button. The speakerās indicator light turns blue.
Notes: If youāre using a single speaker with this transmitter, keep the L/M/R switch on the
bottom of the speaker in the āMā position (for mono). If youāre using more than one speaker
with this transmitter, set the speakers to the āLā (left) or āRā (right) positions according to
their orientation to the listener.
The speaker automatically retunes if it the transmitterās signal. You can also the loses press
Scan-RF / Pair-BT button on the back of the speaker to retune the speaker at any time.
The transmitter turns off automatically if there is no audio signal present for a prolonged
period.
Interference in the form of static and/or distortion can sometimes be heard. If this occurs,
conļ¬ rm the transmitter/speaker adjustments and indicators. If the problem persists, refer to
the Troubleshooting section of this manual.
