Die Prince of Wales hatte eine kampfreiche aber nur kur-

ze Dienstzeit bei der Royal Navy. Sie war das zweite

von fünf Schlachtschiffen der King George V-Klasse. Die

Wasserverdrängung betrug 40.990 t vollbeladen bei einer

Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 27,8 Knoten; Bewaffnung: zehn

356 mm Kanonen, sechzehn 133 mm Geschütze, 48 Geschütze

40 mm und zahlreiche 20 mm Waffen. Die Prince of Wales

wurde im Februar 1939 vom Stapel gelassen und am 4. März

1940 fertiggestellt. Noch nicht voll operationsfähig wurde sie

zusammen mit der Hood zur Jagd auf die Bismarck und die

Prinz Eugen angesetzt. Nach dem Verlust der Hood am 24. Mai

1941 feuerte die bereits schwer angeschlagene Prince of Wales

vor ihrem Abdrehen einige deckende Salven auf die Bismarck,

wodurch diese teilweise manövrierunfähig wurde. Gegen Ende

1941 wurde sie nach Singapur beordert. In den Gewässern vor

Malaysia wurde sie schließlich am 10. Dezember 1941 von star-

ken japanischen Flugzeugverbänden angegriffen und versenkt.

The Prince of Wales had an active but very short period in ser-

vice with the Royal Navy. She was the second of fi ve battleships

in the King George V Class. She had a full load displacement

of 40,990 tonnes with a top speed of 27.8 knots; armament:

ten 356 mm cannon, sixteen 133 mm guns, forty eight 40 mm

guns and numerous 20 mm weapons. The Prince of Wales was

launched in February 1939 and completed on 4thMarch 1940.

Together with the Hood, she was sent to hunt the Bismarck

and the Prince Eugen before she was fully operational. After

the loss of the Hood on 24th May 1941, when already seriously

damaged the Prince of Wales fi red on the Bismarck, hitting the

target several times, and partly disabled it before turning away.

Towards the end of 1941 she was ordered to Singapore. She

was fi nally attacked and sunk by Japanese heavy aircraft in the

seas off Malaysia on 10th December 1941.
