The Smoke/Heat Alarmismounted on the EI 128R and when a fire isde-
tectedthe relaycontacts changeover.Theelectrically isolatedcontacts
can be used for signalling, turning on lights etc.
WARNING: This pattressmustonly beused withone ofthe abovesmoke
alarms as perthese instructions - otherwise theunit will not complywith
the mandatory safety regulations.
Withthe yellow slide switch “on” (as supplied) the relay changesover
whenthe fireis detectedandonly resetswhen thesmoke/heatalarm re-
sets.Withthe slide switch“off” the relay changesover for 2to 12seconds
whenfire is detectedand thenresets –this isuseful with wardencall pan-
els.Ifmomentaryoperationis required,pushthe slideswitchgently and
carefully with a screwdriver to turn it off.
WARNING: Mains poweredSmoke/Heat Alarmsshould be installed by a
qualified electricianin accordance withthe Building RegulationsforElec-
tricalInstallations published by the Institution of Electrical Engineers
(UK).Failuretoinstalltheunit correctlymay exposetheusertoshockor
fire hazards.
Warning: First disconnect the mains from the circuit to be used.
1.Chose amounting position following the siting instructions in the
Smoke/Heat Alarmleaflet.Where the incomingwiring is on the surface of
the ceiling,the appropriatelysized ducting/conduitmustbechosen to
mate with theunit.Use a sharp knifeto remove to materialfrom the se-
lected knockout, makingsurethat there is no gap whenmated with
ducting /conduit.There are three knockouts– twoon thesidewall and
one on the rear.
2.Screw thepattress EI 128R to theceiling after first removing there-
quired knockoutand bringingthe housewires throughit (seefigure 1).If
thecentral knockoutisbeing used,sealaroundthe wireswithsilicone or
similar to prevent air draughts affecting the smoke entering the alarm.
3.Connect thehouse wires (L - Live,N - Neutral andIC - Interconnect,if it
is being used) tothe terminal block on thepattress.If an EI 161R or EI
166R(withremote TEST/HUSH)isbeinginstalled,attachthe “R”wire
fromthe EI152 (seethe EI152instruction) tothe terminalmarked “R”in
thepattress(seefigure1).IftheEI161RorEI166Ris beingusedwith a
manual callpoint MCP400orMCP400A thenconnect theRterminal to
thecallpoint(see figure2). Otherwisedonotconnectanythingto the”R”
terminal.
4.Connectthethree wires(“L”, “N”and“IC”)fromthe pattressto thecon-
nectors on the Smoke/Heat Alarms mounting plate.This “IC” wire must
be connected even ifit isa singlealarm installation.Connectthe earth
wire(ifpresent) fromthe housewiringdirectlytothe terminalonthe
mounting plate.Replace the cover over the terminal wires.
Connect thewires tothe required relaycontacts forcontrolling theauxil-
iary device (the contactsare isolated and are rated at250VAC,5amps re-
sistive).If momentaryrelay operationis required,carefully and gently
slidethe yellow switchto the offposition with asmall screwdriver(see fig-
ure 1).
5.Screwthe mountingplatetothepattresspillarsusingthetwo screws
supplied.
6.Slide the alarm on to the mounting plate.
7.Connect the mainspower –the green LED lightonthe alarm should be
on.Whenthetestbuttonispressed thehorn shouldsound andtherelay
will switch within10 seconds.(Note -with ionisationalarms the relay nor-
mallyswitches 4seconds afterthehorn sounds.Withoptical alarmsthe
relay normally switches within 2 seconds of the horn sounding).
Note 1:A maximum of12 Smoke/HeatAlarm of thetypes specified may
beinterconnected tooneEI 128R unit.Whenone alarmsensesfire all in-
terconnected units will alarm and the relay will switch.
Note 2: An alarm with battery back-up willcontinue tooperate duringa
mains failure butwill not beable to switch therelay.(The relay requires
the 230 VAC to operate).
Note 3:Devices connected tothe relay contactsmustnot givea fire warn-
inguntilthe contactshaveswitchedfor atleast200mSec.(Thecontacts
mayswitch momentarilywhen subjectedto electromagneticinterfer-
ence).
